material research and experiments

Notjustuseless involved an intensive experimental period. The following pictures present this process.

LAYERING

In this phase of the project my interest was focused on the colour mixes resultant from the layering of straws. Many new tones came from the layering of straws with different base colors.

Synthesis

SYNTHESIS

The combination of plastic with other materials can completely change its’ features. This can result in composite materials with new qualities, such as abrasion resistance, waterproofing, increased flexibility or improved resistance to chemicals. In this context the plastic can be used to produce a heavy-duty but still skin friendly soft material.

FUNCTIONALITY

FUNCTIONALITY

Binding the straws to fabric can replace sewing, gluing and seaming, with the material staying washable. These experiments present potential functional applications of the plastic, with uses such as corner of a bag, in the edge of a coat, pocket, threadless, buttonless closing systems or other clothing details.

FORM EXPERIMENTS

Varying the thickness and qualities of fabrics used and spacing between plastic sheets can result in different shapes and structures. As example, straws combined with a thin fabric can produce a foldable, 3D structure.
